Artist statement
“Something Borrowed” is a three track EP exploring modern relationships, conditional affection, and societal expectations surrounding love and marriage. This year for me has had a theme of watching people get married and find their person, leading to an expectation I should be too. But that is the least of my worries, and even when I do try to pursue love it somehow feels temporary. I wanted to use this experience to write pieces of vulnerability and uncertainty to create something resonant.
“Drunk Love” explores the dynamic of only feeling love from someone when they’re intoxicated, making love feel conditional or temporary.
“Rules of Casual” follows the idea that modern dating always seems to be “casual”, almost a game we play when pursuing anyone. With Sally Gyngell on harmonies / backing vocals and Anielle Saminaden on piano, its stripped back arrangement contrasts with this idea.
“Something Borrowed” uses the traditional wedding rhyme “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” to question marriage and the expectations. Featuring Nathan Tewi on drums, Lewis Kerr on Guitar and Callum Spillane on bass, this fuller arrangement enhances the EP’s emotional catharsis, creating a sense of acceptance.
