Charlotte Mercieca is a vocalist and emerging multidisciplinary artist currently studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts, majoring in Music and minoring in Art History at the University of Wollongong.

With a background in classical and operatic singing, her musical practice explores the relationship between voice, identity, and experimental sound. Her recent work focuses on microtonality, vocal resonance, and the interaction between sound and physical materials.

Through combining music with ceramic sculpture and installation, Charlotte explores how the human voice can be transformed and experienced in unconventional ways.

Artist statement

My major project is an experimental sound installation exploring the relationship between microtonality, the human voice, and ceramic forms. Drawing on my background in classical and operatic singing, I investigate how unconventional pitches interact with physical materials to create different sonic experiences.

The installation incorporates four soprano voices projected through four individual speakers and ceramic forms. My creative process involved experimenting with microtonal composition, vocal layering, sound projection, and resonance. I wanted to explore how the shape and structure of each ceramic form could influence the way sound is experienced.

Through this project, I aim to challenge traditional approaches to vocal performance by combining experimental music with sculptural installation. I developed the concept and installation with guidance from my University of Wollongong lecturers, whose feedback supported my creative and technical experimentation.
