Artist statement

“Orchid in Sand” is a collaborative three-track Ep between Jamal Baquayee, Isaac Sybell and Jai Cole led by myself. It explores themes of despair, hope, and clarity as it takes us on a journey through life’s tribulations, represented in the form of a desert. Each piece depicts the perception of going through these three stages, through layered vocals, narration, and textural landscapes.

The first stage, “The Storm” is the period where we feel that intitial state of despair and discomfort at what’s happening around us, and our ability to see beyond the storm is impaired. The second is titled “The Hidden Jewels”. At this point during the journey, you start to find meaning in why everything is happening instead of blaming it. Your pain becomes your mentor, and the lessons it teaches you gives you a new perspective in what the heat actually is… a blessing.

Which leads into stage three – “The Blessing in Disguise”. By the end of our journey, we have gained the ability to see that the blessing was always present, even in the beginning.
