Artist Bio
Kane Upton is a musician, songwriter, and performer studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Music) at the University of Wollongong. As the lead singer and guitarist of the band Dating Kane, he performs across Sydney and Wollongong. Using Ableton Live and Pro Tools, Kane aims to create emotionally powerful, technically refined compositions incorporating the slide guitar.
Artist Statement
My project, titled Slide Guitar, is a two-track EP that explores my progress and technical proficiency in the art of slide guitar, a technique which I have developed over this semester. The EP showcases two contrasting approaches: one track reflecting the traditional blues roots of slide guitar, and the other recontextualising the technique within a modern indie rock framework.
Through this project, I aimed to highlight both the expressive and emotional depth of traditional slide blues, as well as the creative potential of adapting traditional methods to contemporary genres. I performed all instruments and vocals, as well as handled the mixing and mastering processes independently.
This project represents a significant step in my growth as a musician, composer, and producer, challenging me to step outside my comfort zone, embrace a new skill and produce work of a higher artistic and technical standard.
