Artist Bio
Tristan White is an instrumentalist who specialises in guitar. He plays a range of music, from acoustic solo pieces to works for large, multi-instrumental ensembles. His music has been described as easy listening, as it tends to focus on the brighter sides of life.
Artist Statement
My project is an exploration of the musical communities that form around different styles of play, practice, and performance.
Playing alone with no one else to accompany leads to music told from a single perspective, creating a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect which leads to repetition and self reflection. ‘Something About Trees’ is an exploration of the patterns we recognise in ourselves and the people around us, and the questions we ask about them.
Playing in a small group with little to no rehearsal challenges each participant to use their musical vocabulary. This is always a challenge, but with the right people it becomes almost a conversational exercise. ‘Just Once’, performed with Victor Strange (drums) and Will Coleman (bass), is a live recorded jam where a song was developed in only seven takes.
‘9lives’ required many hands – which, in a musical context, seldom makes light work. The performers are Victor Strange (drums), Kyle White (bass), Matilda Dickson (saxophone), Matthew O’Malley (trumpet), Chelsea Daghita (vocals) and myself on both rhythm and lead guitar.
