Program notes

My name is Brody Blackman, I’m 21 years old. I am a guitarist specializing in jazz, funk, classical, Spanish flamenco and 3d spatial audio. I am in a funk band called Little Pink House. I am lucky enough to perform acoustic gigs at restaurants, weddings, bars and cafes, yet it wasn’t always like this. I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years and I started off busking at the Moruya markets when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I used to play pretty much the same 4 songs as people would walk by. Blackbird, Greensleeves, Stairway to Heaven, and Holiday by Greenday. Mum used to say to me “get out there before you lose the cute factor!”.  I loved it but it geez did it used to scared me to death.

I got into classical guitar lessons at 13 years old and took up playing with many different styles of teachers. It was the start of year 11 when I converted from busking to doing gigs. From year 11 to 12 I performed almost every Friday night at the local ‘Air Raid Tavern’ in Moruya. I started off only playing for 30 mins and then gradually gaining more and more songs in my setlist until eventually being able to play for 3 hours straight. I was obsessed with playing. Each Friday I wanted to bring something different. It was at this time playing at the air raid where I pulled away from classical and focused on improvising and playing more rhythmically with flamenco progressions. This is where my journey of flamenco began started listening and becoming obsessed with artists such as Paco de Lucía and Vincent Amigo. I studied under Thomas Lorenzo who taught at the conservation in Spain and is whom I learned advanced traditional flamenco and jazz guitar techniques. “Thanks to his influence, my composing and performing have reached a new level, with music that’s now richer in melodies, rhythm, and smooth transitions, making it more enjoyable for both me and the audience.”
