Martin Sholl is a keyboardist and composer from Marietta, Georgia who moved to Australia in 2020 and now lives in Wollongong where he creates his own music and plays in local bands like Georgia Jean and Lemon Pepper.
Program notes
The creation of my EP has been a journey that involved a lot of self reflection and experimentation in my methods of capturing inspiration. The goal was always to combine spoken word and ambient sound with instrumentals to create an enriching musical experience. But, I truly could not have predicted how well these elements would come together in the final arrangements to evoke a sense of dreamy escapism. In this ten minute daydream you will hear natural ambience recorded locally by me, spoken word from my childhood piano teacher Mr. John Whitworth, tenor saxophone performed by Evan Batkins, and instruments both electronic and acoustic performed and arranged by me. The song titles Affirmation: Second Wind, Source: Natural Light, and Reprieve were all chosen because they resonated with me during the creation of each piece, and the EP is entitled A Step Towards because this project has been a significant step forward in my musical journey towards an ultimately unknowable destination.
