My name is Junjun Liu and I am from China. I am a multi-instrumentalist, a singer, and a composer.
I started my music journey since I was in primary school where I began to learn erhu, a traditional Chinese music instrument. After coming to Australia, I have started to learn music in a more wide context by exploring music theory and practicing on music skills. I have also learned so many different instruments which I have never encountered before and been able to apply them to the process of composition. In September 2020, I was selected by the ASSH Faculty to perform at the Opening Ceremony for the Jillian Broadbent Building.
The title of this EP called “十一” (Shi Yi), which means eleven in English. Generally, in Mandarin, “十” represents ten while “一” represents one. However, in this EP, the “十” represents erhu, and “一” represents myself. This EP portrayed the stage that I have been on throughout my life. Hence, I have named the songs by using numbers and symbols. Music type: Traditional Chinese music+Alternative rock, Dance Music and Folk.
“十一” represents the road I have traveled which can also be called “My Story”. While the songs in this EP are entitled by numbers, the inspiration comes from the song “Seven Personality” by Hua Cheng Yu. I felt touched by the mass dynamics he put into the song and this led me to compose songs that has similar concepts.
The second song “78” is a work that involves myself singing and playing the guitar. It is based on a love story and it represents the numbers of the days I felt alone. My aim is to recall on the beautiful memories through music.
The third piece “X+ π =life” is inspired by dance and traditional Chinese pop song. “X” symbolises the unpredictable future and “Π” represents my life in the present. Collaborators involved in this EP: – classical erhu – Electric guitar (Sebastian Manfrin) – Piano (Chet Tucker)
