Allison Wales

Allison Wales is a singer song writer who is currently conducting a dual major of Music and Japanese here at UOW. Allison started singing at age 4 and during the last 17 years has sung many different styles and genres. She has also performed on stage for her local carols and as a supporting act for the Disability Trust.

My project is a three-song ep called ‘Shine Through’ that has an interconnecting story. Even though they all connect I wanted each to be unique. This is why each song is a different genre, to display each as their own perspective within a larger story. My first song ‘Dreams’ is about someone with large ambitions doubting if they can achieve them. ‘Dreams’ is a theatrical solo using operatic tones in the voice. My second song ‘Looking In’ is about someone close to the person in ‘Dreams’. They can see this person is struggling and full of doubt but want to reassure them that they are not alone. Because this song is about reassurance, I drew inspiration from lullabies and ballads. My final song ‘True You’ is about these two coming together and appreciating themselves for who they are. ‘True You’ is an up-tempo pop inspired piece meant to lift the spirits of all who listen.

Because of my dual major I decided to record each song of ep in English and Japanese. To do this I recorded the instruments first then over dubbed the vocals and vocal harmonies. This made it easier to record the lyrics in both English and Japanese.

My Team has been incredible throughout this semester and I can’t thank them enough for all they have done!

  • Liam Blackall has played and recorded Guitar for ‘Looking In’, Ukulele for ‘True You’ and lent his voice for vocal harmonies in ‘Looking In’ and ‘True You’.
  • Ricky Joseski has played and recorded drums for ‘True You’.
  • Jessica Tan has played and recorded Violin for ‘Looking In’ and lent her voice for vocal harmonies in ‘Looking In’ and ‘True You’.
  • Rachel Tidbury has played and recorded piano for all three songs and lent her voice for vocal harmonies in ‘Looking In’ and ‘True You’.
  • Hinata Tokimoto has done all the Japanese translations for all three songs.
