Anthony Kelly is an emerging artist wrapping up the third year of his bachelor of creative arts. While his individual style and genres of choice have shifted frequently over the years he has always drawn strong influence from the singer/songwriter genre due largely in part to the guitar being his primary instrument
Program notes
My project, Dinner Plates, is a concept EP centering around the allure of substances and how misuse can often lead to addiction. Upon watching the film “Doctor Sleep”, I first heard the quote “A man takes a drink, a drink takes a drink and then the drink takes a man”, and upon beginning my creative process, it was a concept I kept coming back to. The first track, “WAKE UP!” corresponds to the “man takes a drink” component of the phrase. Our protagonist begins to dabble in these alluring substances until we reach the second track, “WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO”. In this track, we are transported into the protagonist’s psyche, experiencing the wonders and terrors of this new addiction. We are met with “TOLERANCE”; the protagonist confronts the grasp their addiction has taken over their livelihood, which is signified by the change in tone and style.
