Artist bio
Olivia is a singer songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist from a small town on the South Coast, called Minnamurra. Olivia’s works explore a complex range of musical knowledge and expression. Olivia has a well-rounded musical background, completing AMEB piano exams to performing in orchestras, as well as volunteering her time and knowledge at local school performances and productions.
Program notes
The work I have created in my home studio is a three track Extended-Play, exploring contemporary jazz. Each composition is piano orientated and explores the different styles of jazz music. Composition is often a vulnerable experience for me and working from home has shaped the way this EP was created.
The idea for my major project, came from the premise of my first song, which ignited the flow for the rest of the work. With a contemporary jazz feel and complex harmonies, creating this old fashion crooning cocktail bar atmosphere. My second track is more modern in its contemporary sound, with an improvised Alto saxophone solo accompanied by a strange piano harmony, creating a feeling of unease and unfamiliarity. My third track incorporates elements of big band jazz, with a larger texture than the other tracks.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank Brendon Comber for all the technical support he has provided during the recording process, including loaning me equipment necessary to complete my project.
