Morrisey Powell
Morrisey is a drummer and percussionist with a fascination for groove, rhythm and genre. As a drummer since childhood, his practice is influenced by the musicians of the fusion, jazz and funk scenes. He is currently planning a Masters in Teaching, with the goal of working as a music teacher in secondary education.
“My project is a look at a bunch of elements that I find interesting and want to explore, mainly the ideas of groove and genre. I wanted to do this because everything that I’ve come to love the most about music comes from the drums… As a drummer it means a lot to me.
The song is 10 minutes long and I’ve tried to mix together a bunch of different grooves and rhythms into a bunch of different sections. I’ve also used this project as a way to explore digital music making; many elements in the song are synths and digital musical instruments. I wanted to use this as an opportunity to educate myself and see just how far I can take the idea; how much can I make digital instruments sound ‘authentic’. Because of this, I’m the only performer on the track.”
