Hugh McLellan

Hugh McLellan is a film score composer, producer and songwriter. He writes soundtracks for both short film and feature length film and across a variety of different genres such as detective fiction, film noir and horror. His scores range from full orchestral works to smaller ensembles to minimalist ambient/synthesised pieces. He also plays piano and flute.
“My idea behind this major project was to redesign the entire soundtrack (music and soundscape) for a pre-existing short film, Chasing Shadows by Armin Siljkovic.
In the process I decided to play around with the horror conventions featured in the films’ original soundtrack and to make the work more unsettling and less of a jump scare. My goal is also to reintroduce some more 70’s and 80’s sounding rock and ambience and give the film musical themes and cues. In my mind, ambient synthesised scores for horror films have lately become too minimalistic and do not have enough musical development in them to make them memorable.
My intention is to break away from that current trend and reintroduce fully fleshed out themes and motifs in the short film and make my work more memorable and exciting.
Thank you to Max Williamson for playing bass guitar and Rowena Russell for Grand Piano.”
