Blending alternative R&amp;B with atmospheric production and melodic songwriting, he continues to develop his sound as an independent artist. His single <strong>&#8220;WHAT SHE WANT&#8221;<\/strong> has surpassed 14,000 streams on Spotify alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SWEET LIES by Jamal Baq\" width=\"1140\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Fplaylists%2F2313245838&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=1140\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><strong>Artist statement<\/strong><br><br><strong>&#8220;SWEET LIES&#8221; <\/strong>is a 3-track EP that explores the complexities of infidelity between two people who are both already in relationships. Told through a narrative-driven arc, the project unfolds across three stages: <strong>Desire (ISN&#8217;T MINE)<\/strong>, <strong>Manipulation (SWEET LIES)<\/strong> and <strong>Realisation (COPY)<\/strong>. Each track captures a different point in the progression of said affairs, from the act of being with someone else, to saying whatever is necessary to maintain the deception and continue getting what they want, to the shameless dismissal of their realisation through morally ugly songwriting. <br><br>Musically, I drew inspiration from altnerative R&amp;B artists such as <strong>Brent Faiyaz<\/strong>, <strong>Aaliyah<\/strong>, <strong>SZA<\/strong>, <strong>Frank Ocean<\/strong>, <strong>Leon Thomas<\/strong> and <strong>Sonder<\/strong>. These influences informed my creative decisions and the sonic direction of the project. I co-produced <strong>&#8220;ISN&#8217;T MINE&#8221;<\/strong> with <strong>Isaac Sybell (dant\u00e9)<\/strong>, who also played guitar on <strong>&#8220;COPY.&#8221;<\/strong> <strong>Romana Rasekhi <\/strong>did additional vocals on <strong>&#8220;COPY&#8221;<\/strong>, while <strong>Michael Bowley <\/strong>contributed a vocal sample<strong> <\/strong>and <strong>Jai Cole <\/strong>added keys on <strong>&#8220;SWEET LIES.&#8221;<\/strong> Each of them playing a part in helping me shape the EP&#8217;s overall sound.<br><br>Looking ahead, I collaborated with <strong>CJ Walker <\/strong>throughout the semester to develop the visual identity of <strong><em>SWEET LIES<\/em><\/strong>. CJ hand-painted the EP&#8217;s cover art, depicting a woman whispering into a man&#8217;s ear, reflecting the themes of secrecy, temptation and deception explored throughout my project.
